Great War: British Acetones at G&W (1916-1918) During the First World War, Gooderham & Worts shareholders placed the distillery plant at the disposal of the British Government. British Acetones Toronto Ltd. was formed early in 1916 to manufacture acetone, an essential ingredient in the production of munitions. At the end of the war, an excellent but still unidentified photographer documented the exterior and interior of the plant, as well as the employees, equipment, and processes that had contributed to the war effort. Toronto Waterfront Viaduct Photographs (1926-1929) Between 1925 and 1934, the City of Toronto built an 18-foot high viaduct along the waterfront to carry railway tracks to the new Union Station. The City’s official photographer, Arthur Goss, shot over 600 photographs to document the building of the viaduct. A selection of these photographs also documented Gooderham & Worts distillery at a time when the shoreline was extended southward and the distillery became landlocked.
