“Denaturing” alcohol means transforming palatable and taxable alcohol into undrinkable and un-taxable industrial alcohol by adding chemicals like methanol and benzene. Denatured alcohol was used in many industrial products, most notably antifreeze, but also such items as window washing fluid, solvents and varnish. Around 1930, Gooderham & Worts transformed Building 47 at No. 24 Tank House Lane into the Denaturing Room. Alcohol was pumped to a tank scale in the mixing penthouse where chemicals were added according to formulae for various products. The denatured alcohol was then transferred to large tanks on platforms along the east and west walls.

Dénaturer un alcool signifie transformer un alcool agréable au goût et imposable en un alcool industriel toxique et non imposable par l’ajout d’agents chimiques comme le méthanol et le benzène. Ce genre d’alcool était utilisé dans de nombreux produits industriels comme principalement les antigels, mais aussi les produits pour laver les vitres, les solvants et les vernis. Vers 1930, Gooderham & Worts transforma le
Bâtiment 47 en une salle de dénaturation (Denaturing Room). L’alcool était pompé dans le réservoir d’une balance située dans la zone de mixage surplombant la salle. On y ajoutait alors les agents chimiques selon les formules de fabrication de chaque produit. L’alcool ainsi dénaturé était transféré dans de grands réservoirs posés sur des bases le long des murs est et ouest de la salle.
