Sheet Metal Hand Brake

Sheet metal brakes are used to bend (“brake”) metals into angles. Originally located in the coppersmithing shop, this large brake was human, not steam-powered, and capable of bending metal that was 3 mm thick and 2.4 m long. The operator fed flat metal into the machine, pulled down the handle, neatly folding a length of metal.

Ces machines servent à plier le métal selon des angles choisis. Située à l’origine dans l’atelier de chaudronnerie sur cuivre, cette grande plieuse fonctionnait manuellement et non à la vapeur, et pouvait plier du métal d’une épaisseur de 1/8 po et d’une longueur de huit pieds. L’opérateur introduisait la feuille plate de métal dans la machine et tirait le levier pour la plier parfaitement.
