This bronze and glass tail box was originally attached to a wine still in Building 56. The hydrometer in its flow tube enabled “stillmen” to assess the strength of alcohol coming off the still. A similar tail box would have been attached to the rectifying still that you can still see in Building 56 at 13 Trinity Street.

Ce coffre à alcool de bronze et de verre était à l’origine rattaché à une colonne à « vin » dans le Bâtiment 56. Grâce à l’alcoomètre ou pèse-alcool à l’intérieur de cette boîte de verre dans laquelle transitait l’alcool de la colonne, les distillateurs pouvaient connaître le degré d’alcool du liquide qui sortait de la colonne. Un instrument semblable aurait été rattaché à la colonne de rectification encore visible dans le Bâtiment 56.
